Call for 2025 Travel Awards Applications

Submit by April 1st, 2025 deadline

Industry-sponsored Graduate Student Travel Awards
  • The Society of Nematologists Honors and Awards Committee anticipates giving out several student travel awards to support students presenting papers (oral or poster) during the 2025 Annual Meeting in the amount of $500 each.
Additionally, the Society of Nematologists will be covering the cost of registration for student travel grant awardees (a $500 value).
Note: you will be responsible for any registration amount in excess of this grant.

  •  Nathan A. Cobb Travel Awards

  • The N.A. Cobb Foundation will be granting four regular student travel awards, each worth $1,000, to support students presenting papers (oral or poster) at the 2025 Annual Meeting. Each recipient will have their $500 conference registration prepaid by the Foundation and will be awarded a check for $500 at the conference.

      • New for 2025: From the new Richard Sikora Fund for Plant-parasitic Nematode Management, the Cobb Foundation will also be providing two additional awards of $1,000 each ($500 pre-paid registration + $500 check at conference). These awards are open to students and early career post-doctoral researchers with active SON membership. Post-docs will be required to give an oral presentation in a regular session to qualify for the award.

Industry and Cobb student travel awards will be awarded out of a single pool of applications.

Eligibility requirements for Travel Award Applicants:

    • Applicants must be full-time graduate or undergraduate students at the time of the meeting or have completed graduate degree requirements less than 12 months prior to the meeting; exceptions are the two Sikora awards which are open to early career post-doctoral researchers.
    • The Sikora awards are awarded only to current members of the Society of Nematologists, all other awards do not require membership.
    • Applicants must give a presentation or poster at the annual meeting but do not have to participate in one of the student presentation competition sessions.
    • Previous student travel award recipients are eligible for travel awards for this year’s meeting.

Procedure for Applying for a Travel Award:

    • Applying for a travel award requires completing three steps. Applicants must 1) fully complete the online travel award application page (button link below), 2) wherein you will be required to submit a cover letter and presentation abstract as a single PDF file, and 3) submit the same abstract (no cover letter) but in word document format at the same time as submitting the travel award application materials.
    • The cover letter required for step 2 above must be no more than 1 page long and describe the student’s research and also explain why the student wants to attend the SON meeting. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR LAST NAME IS INCLUDED IN THE NAME OF YOUR PDF FILE SUBMISSION. (e.g. "CWram_SON2025.pdf")
    • The abstract must follow the guidelines for the annual meeting, as described on the 2025 Annual Meeting Abstract Submission Guidelines.  NOTE: Abstracts submitted must be reviewed by two people, and submitting an abstract for the meeting requires payment of a $50 fee. If you are not selected for a travel award and are unable to attend the conference, this fee will be reimbursed to you.
    • Students may apply for more than one type of travel award for this meeting, but will receive only one.

Criteria for selecting award recipients will be based primarily on the quality of science; however, instances of financial need may be taken into consideration.
