2024 Student Travel Awards

Submit by April 1st, 2024 deadline

Industry-sponsored Graduate Student Travel Awards
  • The Society of Nematologists Honors and Awards Committee anticipates giving out several student travel awards to support students presenting papers (oral or poster) during the 2024 Annual Meeting in the amount of $500 each.
New this year! The Society of Nematologists will be covering the cost of registration for student travel grant awardees (a $450 value).

  •  Nathan A. Cobb Student Travel Awards

  • The N.A. Cobb Foundation also anticipates granting four awards of $800 each to help offset the cost of student attendance at the 2024 Society of Nematologists Annual Meeting.  For more information about Cobb Foundation awards and endowments see  https://nematologists.org/Cobb_Endowment.

Eligibility requirements for Student Travel Award Applicants:

  • Applicants must be full-time graduate students at the time of the meeting or have completed graduate degree requirements less than 12 months prior to the meeting.
  • Applicants are not required to be members of the Society of Nematologists.
  • Previous student travel award recipients are eligible for travel awards for this year’s meeting.

Procedure for Applying for a Student Travel Award:

  • Applying for a student travel award requires completing three steps. Applicants must 1) fully complete the online travel award application page (button link below), 2) wherein you will be required to submit a cover letter and presentation abstract as a single PDF file, and 3) submit the same abstract (no cover letter) but in word document format at the same time as submitting the travel award application materials.
    • Applicants must give a presentation or poster at the annual meeting but do not have to participate in one of the student presentation competition sessions.
    • The cover letter required for step 2 above must be no more than 1 page long and describe the student’s research and also explain why the student wants to attend the SON meeting. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR LAST NAME IS INCLUDED IN THE NAME OF YOUR PDF FILE SUBMISSION. (e.g. "NSchroeder_SON2024.pdf")
    • The abstract must follow the guidelines for the annual meeting, as described on the 2024 Annual Meeting Abstract Submission Guidelines.  NOTE: Abstracts submitted must be reviewed by two people, and submitting an abstract for the meeting requires payment of a $50 fee. If you are not selected for a travel award and are unable to attend the conference, this fee will be reimbursed to you.
    • Students may apply for more than one type of travel award for this meeting, but will receive only one.

Industry and Cobb student travel awards will be awarded out of a single pool of applications.

      •  Western SARE Student Travel Awards

      • Thanks to the generous contribution from Western SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education), three travel grants of $1,500 are available for individual student travel to this conference. Students will be notified by Dr. Koon-Hui Wang if selected.

Additional eligibility requirements for Western SARE Student Travel Awards

      • The student applicant must be a full-time graduate student at an accredited university in the Western US, engaged in agricultural science research under the guidance of a tenure track faculty (main advisor).
      • The student applicant must deliver a scientific presentation (poster, talk, workshop, etc.) during the professional conference.
      • Under the direction of the faculty advisor the student applicant can request travel funds upon acceptance of an abstract to present at the conference.
      • A letter of support from their main advisor must accompany the student application. The letter should address:
        1. The student needs more travel support due to challenges or experiences that may have impacted the student prior or during their graduate studies.
        2. The student is participating in a professional conference for the first time.
        3. The student is advanced in their study program.

          Western SARE Travel Award Application

** Remember: If you would also like to be considered for the Western SARE Travel Award, you will also need to submit the WSARE Application in addition to the Student Travel Award Application.

Criteria for selecting award recipients will be based primarily on the quality of science; however, instances of financial need may be taken into consideration.

Thank you to our Student Travel Award Sponsors!
